Use hours + minutes ÷ 60
For 7 hours 45 minutes: 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 decimal hours. For 8 hours 18 minutes: 8 + 18 ÷ 60 = 8.30 decimal hours. Avoid writing 7.45 to represent 7 hours 45 minutes.
Keep precision until the final calculation
Twenty minutes equals one-third of an hour, approximately 0.3333. If you repeatedly round each short duration before adding them, your total can drift. Add the underlying minutes first, then convert the combined result.
Use the right format for the task
Hours:minutes is often easier for reviewing a shift. Decimal hours is convenient for multiplying by a pay rate. The time report displays both so you can check the relationship.
